Plea against municipal chairperson dismissed

Staff Reporter

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday dismissed an appeal filed against a single judge's verdict declaring V. Devayani elected as chairperson of the Palakkad municipality.

The single judge had declared Ms. Devayani elected as chairperson of the municipality as she secured the second highest number of votes in the election to the chairperson. The vacancy of the chairperson arose as the elected chairperson refused to take oath and assume office. The single judge had held that it was "situational requirement" that the person who secured the second position in the number of votes should be declared as the chairperson and administered the oath. The appeal was filed by Manickan A, an independent councillor.

Dismissing the appeal, the Bench comprising Chief Justice V.K. Bali and Justice S. Siri Jagan observed that the appellant could file a petition seeking to review the judgement before the single judge.

Devaswom interview

The Bench allowed the Travancore Devaswom Board to conduct interview scheduled on November 22 and 23 for the post of clerk-cum-subgroup officer II. However, the court made it clear that no appointment to the posts shall be made until further orders. The court passed the orders on a petition filed by the TDB seeking permission of the court to hold the interview as it had already been scheduled. The counsel for the TDB had on Monday submitted that appointment of clerks was stopped and that the interview for these posts would begin only after getting the permission of the court.

SNC Lavalin case

In an affidavit, T.P. Nandakumar, Editor of Crime Weekly, said that the review petition by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was part of a larger conspiracy to scuttle the investigation into the SNC Lavalin case.

The affidavit was filed in response to a review petition filed by the CBI seeking to expunge the observation of the court that it had already taken over the investigation.
