ANANTAPUR: The Department of Science and Technology under the Union Minister of Science and Technology has sanctioned a Rs. 1.45-crore project to the Department of Chemistry in Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) here. The funds will be spent on improving the infrastructure and taking up research over the next five years. M.Sc. Chemistry is one of the most sought after courses on the campus in the recent years for the simple reason that the department has able to place several of its students in industries on completion of their course, with the university-industry cooperation. It is the only department on the campus where campus interviews are being held every year for placements.
Though several universities across the country had vied for the FIST project (Funds for Improvement of Science and Technology Infrastructure in Universities and Higher Education Institutions), the proposal of SKU clinched it. It is the biggest project sanctioned to any department in the university so far.
Infrastructure
Head of Department of Chemistry M.C.S. Subha explained on Monday that the funds would be utilised for purchase of latest laboratory equipment and improvement of infrastructure in the department for taking up research in the field. She stated that the SKU had got the project on the basis of student's performance, research potential of the department and placement of students after completion of the course.
