LUCKNOW: Taking a cue from Samajwadi Party-led Government's `populist schemes' ahead of the coming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the State Congress unit has launched a cattle donation drive to rope in economically backward families.
Affluent individuals
UPPCC president Salman Khursheed launched the pashu dan (animal donation) scheme in Hardoi district, giving away milch cattle to below poverty line families at Sumai Basoha village. Under this scheme, affluent individuals and NGOs would donate milch cattle to the poor families to supplement their income, UPPCC Relief and Rehabilitation Committee Chairperson Annu Tandon said. ``Nearly 80 per cent women in villages rear cattle without any formal training. The scheme will help supplement their family income through sale of surplus milk, besides providing a nutritious diet to their children,'' Mr. Tandon said. Other long-term measures to ensure rehabilitation of rural families will be taken in other parts of the State, she added. Party workers will ensure the donated animals are not sold to pay off debts and assistance of NGOs would be sought to provide fodder and treat the cattle. While Unemployment Allowance and Kanya Vidya Dhan schemes introduced by the Samajwadi party Government were proving to be a burden on the exchequer, the animal donation drive will help in uplift of the poor, Mr. Tandon said.- PTI
