Child heart surgeries: State Government's directive to private hospitals

Special Correspondent

Stick to NIMS tariff for child heart surgeries, says YSR

HYDERABAD: The State Government has accepted the proposal made by the scrutiny committee on child heart surgeries for accepting the age as mentioned in the referral card as qualifying age.

The committee made the proposal to ensure that surgeries would be performed on such children, who were below 12 at the time of registration, and exceed the limit at the time of surgery.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who reviewed the situation with senior officials agreed to ask the private hospital managements to follow the tariff charged by the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences for performing heart surgeries on children.

While the cost of surgery had been finalised by the NIMS, private hospitals conducting heart surgeries were hitherto entitled for only 80 per cent of the cost.

Case details

Officials told Dr. Reddy that of the total 5,500 children identified during the screening camps, surgeries/interventions had been taken up in case of 5,373 cases in 11 Government, 29 private and three recognised hospitals in other States. The Government hospitals contributed to 38.62 per cent of the total surgeries/interventions while the private sector's share was 61.38 per cent.

The Government had so far disbursed Rs. 11.21 crores against Rs. 20 crores sanctioned to the Director of Medical Education towards the costs while the disbursement of Rs. 1 crore was pending.

Dr. Reddy asked the officials to chalk out action plan in such a way that the parents of the patients were not made to run from pillar to post.
