To come out with comprehensive scheme to implement Act
|
CHENNAI:
The Government has told the Madras High Court that it will come out with a comprehensive scheme to implement provisions of the Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act, including appointment of District Protection Officers, within four weeks.
The submission was made during in-camera proceedings before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice K. Chandru on Tuesday. The Home Secretary and the Social Welfare Department Secretary had been summoned to court. The Bench asked the officials to come to the court after a public interest litigation petition was filed by the Sweet Heart Movement for Have-nots, seeking a direction to the State Government to appoint district-level Protection Officers as stipulated in the Act.
The petitioner submitted even after the Act came into force with effect from October 23, 2006 the Government had not appointed the officers. She said even without appointment of such officers and framing of rules, judicial magistrates were bound to entertain applications.
