Winter session begins today

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The winter session of Parliament begins on Wednesday, but day one will see only obituary references.

While the Rajya Sabha will be adjourned as a mark of respect to Lalit Suri, who passed away after the end of the monsoon session, the Lok Sabha will be adjourned as a tribute to the "outstanding contribution" to the cause of the downtrodden, especially Dalits, by Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram, who died recently.

The decision to adjourn the Lok Sabha as an exception got the support of all parties at a meeting chaired by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday.

The Speaker tabled at the meeting an adjournment proposal sent to him by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachauri.
