Mobile ophthalmic units proposed for rural areas

  • Funds for the van to be raised from a series of programmes
  • Several programmes to eradicate curable blindness planned

CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Madras, T. Nagar, the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank and its associate organisations have launched a series of programmes to eradicate curable blindness in the State.

The programme, called `Blind free India - a reality', will be supported by various fund-raising events to be held in the coming months.

Chennai Vision Charitable Trust, a community ophthalmology wing of the Rajan Eye Care Hospital, has launched a scheme wherein a donor who makes a one-time payment of Rs.5,000 or Rs.10,000 will help treat, every year for his lifetime, a poor patient requiring surgery for cataract, corneal transplant or glaucoma, said Mohan Rajan, medical director of the hospital.

The hospital has proposed to launch a mobile state of the art ophthalmic unit as part of its rural outreach programme.

    Series of programmes

The funds for the van will be raised from a series of programmes from Wednesday through Sunday in the city.

On Wednesday, the Rotary and Neeta Memorial Charitable Trust will hold the Rota Neeta Talent competition for special children at Kamaraj hall in Teynampet, said Cub president V. Vasudevan.

On Friday, the Club will honour N. Lakshmi Narayanan, chief executive officer of Cognizant Technology Solutions, with the `For the Sake of Honour Award.'

On Sunday, Y. Gee. Mahendra will receive the `Vocational Excellence Award.'

Sur Sangam, a fund-raiser for the club, will bring to Chennai film songs of Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi among others at the Music Academy.

Donors who pay Rs.5,000 will receive two tickets for Sur Sangam. The funds collected will help launch the Rota Vision on Wheels, the mobile ophthalmic unit.
