HYDERABAD: The plans of terrorists might come unstuck once hi-tech research on developing Tera Hertz technology for sensing concealed explosives or weapons from a certain distance fructifies. Fifty 50 scientists, including those from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are working it. "We expect that there will be some application in five years," said Prahlada, Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO, referring to the research being done by a group of specialists at the University of Hyderabad, and elsewhere.
Non-destructive testing
Briefing reporters on a national seminar on `Non-Destructive Evaluation' beginning here on December 7, Dr. Prahlada, who is co-chairman of the organising committee, said the event, being organised by the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ISNT), was aimed at bringing together scientists, engineers, academicians and industrialists to discuss new trends and challenges. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) or evaluation as a tool could help locate defects in a material and plays an important role in preventing catastrophic failures.
Applications
It has been applied in a variety of disciplines, including healthcare, defence, aerospace, petrochemicals, atomic energy, automobile industries and railways, among others. It has also been used extensively in checking `weld strength' of pipelines laid in irrigation projects and in detection of land mines.
