VIJAYAWADA : The floor leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) P. Gowtham Reddy on Tuesday demanded the implementation of mayor-in-council system in the civic body here. Addressing a press conference after returning from a three-day Kolkata tour along with the Mayor and a few corporators, Mr. Reddy said the CPI had been urging the State Government for the last two decades to implement mayor-in-council system in the city. This system would ensure transparency in administration, as people could monitor the functioning of the local body. Under this system, projects like construction of shopping complex and underground parking could be privatised, he said. Mr. Reddy said the Kolkata Municipal Corporation succeeded in providing basic facilities to its citizens. He wanted the VMC to function on the lines of KMC and not to levy taxes on drinking water and underground drainage.
