VIJAYAWADA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) district committee has demanded the Government to ensure that every family affected in the recent `Ogni' cyclone gets 20 kg rice and five litres of kerosene. In an open letter sent to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday, CPI (M) district secretary V. Umamaheswara Rao said many poor families did not receive relief at V. Kothapalem, Pedagurumotu, Jarugupalem and other villages. The officials should be asked to distribute relief even to those families who had no ration cards. Mr. Rao wanted the administration to conduct all-party meeting at district and mandal levels to elicit their opinion in solving problems of people. Enumeration of houses should be done in a transparent manner and compensation provided to all affected families. Mr. Rao said the compensation of Rs. 750 per acre of paddy would not be sufficient by all accounts and the Government should enhance it to Rs. 2,500 per acre. In respect of commercial crops, the compensation should be 20 to 30 per cent of the total cost of crop. Mr. Rao pointed out one lakh acres of different crops were totally submerged in the floods and another 2 lakhs of acres were partially submerged.
