Central Government staff plan dharna

Staff Reporter

Demand for interim relief figures high on list

VISAKHAPATNAM : Various unions of Central Government employees, defence and postal unions will organise a dharna at the Collectorate here on November 24 demanding, among other things, interim relief from January 1 pending the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.

The Confederation of Central Government Employees, All India Defence Employees' Federation and Federation of National Postal Organisations called the protest.

Demand referred

B. Anjaneyulu, general secretary of Naval Civil Employees Union representing five unions, told reporters here on Monday that the UPA Government had referred the demand for interim relief to the commission instead of sanctioning it.

He compared it with the payment of interim relief before the constitution of the Fifth Pay Commission and the second instalment later.

Process delayed

The United Front Government had in the past sanctioned a fitment of 40 per cent amply benefiting employees.

The UPA Government now had not only delayed the constitution of the commission, but also issued the terms of reference subsequently.

He said though the issue of interim relief had been raised at the Joint Consultative Machinery meeting, the government had not responded favourably.

Other issues

Other demands included withdrawal of new pension scheme being implemented for employees who had joined after 1.1.2004, lifting of the ceiling on compassionate appointments and ban on recruitment.

Representatives of Non-Gazetted Staff Union of the Cyclone Warning Centre, MES, NAD, NSTL civil employees and postal unions were present.
