CID to probe marks scam in university

Special Correspondent

We want to go deep and put an end to this mess: V-C

  • Two Examination Section staffers charged with fraud
  • Some 37 students of M.Sc. (chemistry) course `benefit'

VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra University has decided to hand over to the CID the task of investigating into the alleged tampering of marks in the post-graduate examinations.

Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy said this here on Tuesday.

It was alleged that a senior assistant J. Suryanarayana, who is now under suspension, and a junior assistant Appa Rao, who is absconding, of the Examinations Section of the university had manipulated marks of 37 candidates of the M.Sc. (chemistry) course who failed in the 2005-06 examinations. The manipulation helped these students pass the examinations, it was alleged.

It was suspected that many students, including those from other courses, benefited with the tampering of marks lists. The manipulation was reportedly done while entering marks from the Tabulated Register in which marks were noted after correcting answer sheets into the computer. The original marks certificate issued to a candidate was generated from the computer.

    Prima facie evidence

The interim report submitted by a three-member inquiry committee consisting of senior professors of the university prima facie found that the allegation was correct, Prof. Reddy said. "We want to go deep into the affair and put an end to this, and hence decided to hand over the investigation to the CID. We will give all cooperation to the CID," he said.

Some vested interests keen to make quick money at the cost of the university's reputation had resorted to this ugly practice and the administration should teach them a lesson, the Vice-Chancellor said.

He also suspected that this practice was more in the College of Science and Technology. Following the scam, it was decided to check the marks lists from 2000 onwards in all courses. The role of the computer section in issuing the manipulated marks lists would also be probed, he added.

Answering a question, Prof. Reddy said that employees working in a section or department for a long time were being transferred.
