Dispute hits tourism activities at Chowara

Staff Reporter

Police directed to ensure safety of tourists

Thiruvananthapuram: A dispute between a group that got licence to put up beach umbrellas and chairs on 150 sq. m of the Chowara beach and resort authorities has led to disruption of tourism activities.

The 10-member group, which managed to obtain the licence from the Port Officer, Kollam, prevented the resort authorities from putting up beach umbrellas and chairs on the remaining stretch.

Meeting

The stakeholders of the tourism industry, Kottukal Tourism Development Committee, and others petitioned the authorities against this.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Fort, at a meeting convened at the Circle Inspector's Office, Vizhinjam, on November 18, directed the group not to disrupt tourism activities and to confine their activities to the 150 sq. metres of the beach in the region.

Revenue Divisional Officer K.V. Mohankumar, on the basis of another complaint, directed the Circle Inspector, Vizhinjam, to provide necessary protection to the beach authorities and licence holders. Mr. Mohankumar also asked the police to ensure the safety of the tourists. Secretary of the Chowara Unit of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association C.M. Joseph in a release, pointed out that the group violated the decisions taken at the meeting.

"They are claiming that the entire beach belongs to them. The adamant stand taken by the group that has managed to obtain licence for 150 sq. m on the 10-km beach that extends from Azhimala temple to Adimalathura cannot be justified," he said.

The group also defied the directive of the police team led by the Sub-Inspector, Vizhinjam.
