THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The heavy intermittent rain that drenched the city since Tuesday morning caused flooding and traffic snarls in many areas. Soon after the rain began, the East Fort and Thampanoor areas got flooded. The flooding in the Thampanoor area caused storm water to collect on S.S. Kovil Road leading from Thampanoor to the Housing Board junction. Cars and other vehicles parked on the stretch were removed with great difficulty. By afternoon, the canals that crisscross the city were in spate. Following this, storm water entered houses located by the side of the canal at Kannammoola, Goureesapattom and Thekkummoodu. Floodwater also entered Bala Nagar and Rajiv Nagar in the All Saints College area. An earthmover from a private company was pressed into service to tackle flooding in the road behind the RBI building. Flooding was also reported from the Muttathara area, where a sewage farm is located. Thiruvananthapuram Tahsildar Mohanan Pillai said that though floodwater entered many parts of the city, it drained away in a couple of hours. "The Fire and Rescue Services was not called into action anywhere. We did not have to relocate people, and there was no need to open relief camps," he said. Copious amount of water spurting from sewerage manholes was, yet again a major cause for flooding in many roads. Though officials of the Kerala Water Authority say that it is the storm water that is let into the sewerage from houses that overwhelms the network during a heavy rain, they have not taken any steps to identify these houses.
