NEW DELHI: Noted playwright Girish Karnad on Tuesday presented the prestigious Sanskriti Awards-2006 to five talented people from different walks of life at a function at India International Centre here.

The Sanskriti Awards for this year were conferred on Mitul Dutta for literature, Sachin Kumar Jain for journalism, A. Balasubramaniam for art, Ramanjit Kaur for theatre and Farhad Contractor for outstanding social achievement. Ms. Dutta edits poetry magazine "Kobiyaal" that provides a platform for young poets.

A freelance journalist working on issues relating to the poor and the marginalised, Mr. Jain through his writings in Hindi has raised public consciousness. Formally trained in painting and self-taught as a sculptor, Chennai-born artist Balasubramaniam has participated in various solo and group shows in India, Spain, Poland and Korea. Ms. Kaur has essayed a wide range of roles with sensitivity and maturity. She established "The Creative Arts" at Kolkata in 2002 to create awareness and impart formal, systematic training in various fine arts, especially theatre. Mr. Contractor has been working in Barmer to provide sufficient drinking water to the local people.
