Cabinet okays new power project

Staff Reporter

Go-ahead for sale of ethanol-blended petrol

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday gave its nod for commissioning of the 1,000 MW Pragati Power Project Phase-III at Bawana. It also cleared the decks for sale of 5 per cent ethanol-blended petrol and decided to release Rs.22.3 lakhs for air-conditioning of the district courts in Dwarka.

These decisions were taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Cabinet gave the green signal to commission the gas-based Pragati Power Project at Bawana at an estimated cost of Rs.4,500 crores. The MoU with Petronet for supply of gas for the plant has already been signed and the gas would be available by April 2009. The Chief Minister said it was extremely important for Delhi to increase its self-reliance in power generation from plants located within Delhi so that it is not vulnerable to the vagaries of the Northern Grid and the political factors that often influence inter-State supply of power.

Secondly, in view of the forthcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games as well as the increasing demand of power, enhancement of power generation assumes added significance. The new project would be able to meet the growing demand of power in Delhi apart from making it a surplus State.

The Cabinet also cleared the decks for sale of 5 per cent ethanol-blended petrol in Delhi and decided to waive special duty and other related fees on ethanol under the Punjab Excise Act 1914 as in force in Delhi.

This decision has been taken keeping in view the need of conservation of petroleum fuel and to increase the use of sustainable fuel along with curbing air pollution due to plying of vehicles on petrol. The decision would lead to a saving of 25 paise per litre to consumers of ethanol-blended petrol.
