Villagers' arrest sparks tension in Bhalki

Staff Correspondent

One injured, buses damaged in stone-throwing

Bidar: The arrest of villagers who allegedly assaulted a Tahsildar and police personnel in Mehkar on Tuesday sparked tension in Bhalki on Wednesday.

Members of Chhava Maratha Sanghatan and other associations threw stones at one private bus and five government buses in protest against the arrest of 60 villagers. Mohammad Shafiuddin, who was waiting at the bus stand, was injured. He has been shifted to a private hospital in Hyderabad.

North East Karnataka Transport Corporation said that some buses had been damaged. The protestors demanded that the villagers be released immediately.

The villagers were arrested on charges of assaulting officials on duty and setting on fire Tahsildar Manikappa Mangalaagi's jeep and an NEKRTC bus. Mr. Mangalagi, sub-inspector Adiveppa Banni and constable Ashok Kumar have suffered minor injuries. The villagers were angry that the authorities had removed a picture of Shivaji hung from a pole in front of the bus stand. Mr. Mangalagi and the police officials said the picture had been hung from a pole on a makeshift platform in the middle of the road. The situation was under control in Mehkar and Bhalki, the police said. A holiday has been declared in Mehkar. Chhava sanghatan staged a "rasta roko" in Bhatambra.
