Positive note

That Chinese President Hu Jintao has opened his India tour on a positive note is heartening. India should not lose the opportunity to take China's hand of friendship. The atmosphere is favourable to address the long-standing boundary issue with a view to reaching a settlement. As the saying goes "good fences make good neighbours."

Mr. Hu's visit — the second by a top Chinese leader in one-and-a-half years — is a clear indication of China's genuine interest in fostering ties with India. More steps should be taken to foster people-to-people contact, and establishment of cultural centres and schools of languages in both countries.

When I read the report "Mumbai family awaits Hu" (Nov. 22), my mind went back to the wonderful Hindi film Doctor Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani directed by V. Shantaram, who also played Kotnis. The film portrayed the selflessness of the Indian surgeon in a foreign land. The picture was based on the book And One Did Not Come Back.

If only we had more doctors like Dwarkanath Kotnis, the lot of the suffering poor in India would have been far, far better.
