To popularise throwball

TIRUCHI: With throwball getting familiar with youths in major cities, the Throwball Federation of India (TFI) is working to popularise the sport in smaller centres.

That might have been the reason behind the TFI choosing Karur as the venue for the 29th senior National Throwball Championship. A three-day event concluded on Sunday.

Since its formation in 1985, TFI has been regularly conducting senior and junior National tournaments. Throwball was also included in School Games Federation of India (SGFI) calendar in 2001. "The sport is affordable even to players from the rural areas. Also the chances of getting injured while playing is very minimal," says the Secretary-General of TFI, T. Ramanna.

India is a force to reckon with in the sport what with the country's women team winning the Asian Championship in 2002 and 2005. The rules of the sport are also updated in accordance with the modern trend. "Earlier there used to be nine players in a team and now it is reduced to seven. This move has made the game more interesting and also gives a chance for the players to be more active on the field," Mr. Ramanna says.
