BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh, which has long been known for its awful roads, now claims to have emerged as the top State in the country by constructing 11,110 km of new roads under 2,384 projects implemented through the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna (Prime Minister's Rural Road Scheme).

According to an official statement here, of the Rs. 2693.52 crores received till October this year, Rs. 2403.24 crore has been spent by the State Government on various PMGSY projects. The State Government has set the target of linking every village with a population of more than 1,000 with an all-weather road by the year 2009 under the Bharat Nirman Yojana.

Similarly, there is a plan to connect villages in the notified areas having a population of over 500 with proper roads. For achieving this target, 27,561 km of new roads would be constructed while 18,627 km of existing roads would be upgraded.

In the sixth phase of rural road construction, Rs.1296.10 crore has been sanctioned by the State Government for 1,243 road projects stretching over 5,653 km.

The State Government has also tied up with the Asian Development Bank for Rs.560.71 crore to construct 2,501 km of new roads. The State Government has claimed that on an average three villages are being connected by road every day in Madhya Pradesh.
