Swaminathan meets Buddhadeb

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: M.S. Swaminathan, Chairman of the National Commission on Agriculture, said here on Wednesday that land which was non-suitable for agriculture should be acquired for setting up industry. Greater industrialisation did not necessarily affect food security but prime agricultural land should be reserved for farming, he said.

Dr. Swaminathan, who met Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said there should be a code of conduct on the use of land and marketing of agricultural produce. Dr. Swaminathan discussed with Mr. Bhattacharjee ways to improve the income of small farmers.

Creation of job opportunities in the rural sector and providing work security should be the aim of any agricultural policy, he said.

The West Bengal Government is preparing a map, which will identify land use patterns and land on which industry could be set up.
