JCT blanks East Bengal

NEW DELHI: JCT Mills, Phagwara defeated East Bengal 4-0 in Group `B' of the Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Wednesday. The win ensured the Punjab side a place in the next round with a tally of four points with a match left.

In another match of the same group, Dempo also took its tally to four points from two matches when it shut out Army XI 2-1.

Daljit Singh's spectacular work in the defence complemented an outstanding Parveen Kumar upfront, both tireless and innovative for JCT.

Daljit paved the way for the first two goals with neat floaters. On the first occasion, Paveen headed in superbly and then an unmarked Sunday Ambrose nodded in comfortably.

The third goal was a lovely combination between Chidi Edeh and Adebayo Tokunbo with the latter chesting down the cross and slamming with precision.

The rout was complete when M. Suresh beat his own goalkeeper with a back pass. Earlier, Dempo emerged the better side, scoring once in each half. It took the lead in the fifth minute through Anthony Pereira but lost the advantage the next minute when N. Guernilal finished a through ball nicely.

Four minutes from the end, substitute Joaqim Abranches slotted in a flag kick by Guernilal. — Special Correspondent
