Memorial museum opened

ALAPPUZHA: Meghalaya Governor M.M. Jacob declared open Revi Karuna Karan Memorial Museum here at a function on Wednesday evening. The museum exhibits the art and artefacts collected by Karan, doyen of coir industry, and his wife Betty R. Karan from different parts of the world.

Mr. Jacob said Karan, in his capacity as a consultant of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and representative of India in tariff negotiations with the European Economic Community, strived to get access to foreign markets for the coir industry. Mr. Jacob said Karan wanted to modernise the coir industry and carried out bold experiments.

He said the museum would be an asset to Alappuzha, which was now all set to return to its old glory through the growing tourism industry. The former Finance Minister Vakkom Purushotha man, who presided over the function, reminisced that Karan was a perfect gentleman who possessed a fine aesthetic sense, which prompted him to collect exceptional things from different parts of the world. He said said Ms. Karan also possessed a genuine taste for exquisite things and the public would get a rare opportunity to witness such items.
