"I was thrilled when `Sethu' was a big hit"

S.R. Ashok Kumar

"I was flooded with offers after `Sethu'. But I did not take up any of them."

Actor Abitha

`Sethu' was an unforgettable film for director Bala, hero `Chiyan' Vikram and heroine Abitha, who played the role of Abithakuchalambal (the director rechristened Jenila as Abitha). The film was a huge success and the young girl known as Jenni stuck to her screen name.

As a teenager, I went to see the shooting of a serial `Nancy' near my house at Thiruvottiyur.

The heroine of the serial was Sangavi. The director and others must have watched me everyday. They called me and asked whether I was interested in acting.

The team came home, spoke to my parents and I played the heroine's sister in their next TV serial `Criminal'.

After doing a couple of serials, I did a film `Golmal', again as the sister of the lead lady. At that time, director Bala, who was doing `Sethu', called me.

The moment they asked me whether I was interested in the movie, I said I had done a couple of TV serials and a movie.

They then sent me back saying they were searching for a new face.

After three months, director Bala called me back for a photo session. I was selected and rechristened Abitha. I was thrilled when the film was a big hit.

Then I did `Poove Pen Poove', `Seerivarum Kalai', `Arasatchi' and `Unarchigal'. Till now, I have completed four films in Kannada and two in Malayalam.

I was flooded with offers after `Sethu'. But I did not take up any of them, as my parents wanted me to complete my studies.

I went on to finish my PG in Sociology from Annamalai University. That's why I was able to accept very few offers.

My best film till date is, of course, `Sethu' and then `Arasatchi' where I played the sister's role ... it was one of the good roles at that time.

Now I am doing two serials in Tamil. `Sorgam' which comes in the afternoon slot and `Rajarajeswari' telecast on Sunday nights.

I am playing the heroine, the role previously done by Malavika who has now left the serial due to her job in Bangalore.

My interest in life is to travel all around the world with my sister or mother. I am certainly working at getting awards in acting.

Once while working in for a commercial spot, I was dancing near the sea and a big wave pulled me into the sea. Pandiarajan, my co-star, caught my hair and brought me back to the shore.

On another occasion at Varkala, Kerala, a boat capsized and people in the unit saved us. I can say that I don't like being in water.
