Takes extreme step after tiff with husband over trivial issue

  • Husband chides her for selling groceries on credit
  • Pours kerosene over sleeping son, sets him ablaze

HYDERABAD: A woman killed her son by setting him ablaze and later committed suicide by immolating herself at her house at Hayathnagar on Tuesday night after a quarrel with her husband over a trivial issue.

According to the police, L. Hemalatha (28) quarrelled with her husband Ambu Das after he allegedly admonished her for giving essential commodities from their grocery store on credit basis to the customers. Dejected over this, she poured kerosene on her 11-year-old son Vara Prasad and set him afire while he was fast asleep and later she ended her life. Das was sleeping outside the house when the incident took place, the police said.

The couple came to the city from their native Nalgonda district 11 years ago and opened a shop near their house. Prasad was a seventh-standard student of a private school in Vanasthalipuram.

The police registered a case of suspicious death under Section 174 CrPc and handed over the bodies to the relatives after autopsy at the Osmania General Hospital mortuary.
