BANGALORE: With your area corporator stepping down from office on Thursday, you may be wondering whom to approach for getting the civic problem redressed.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) officials say there is no need to worry as the civic body will now be at your service and take "quick decisions" to ensure that citizens are not put to any hardship.

On Wednesday, BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj told The Hindu that the civic body would take "quick decisions on all infrastructure related matters." "We will expedite the implementation of several infrastructure projects that are on the anvil and ensure that people will not be put to any hardship. Our priority is to set up automated and multi-storeyed car parking lots, upgrade roads including all arterial roads and the Core Inner Ring Road," he said. All markets in the city, including Malleshwaram market would be refurbished and more public toilets would be built.

Asserting that the BMP is working on a new lease policy to protect BMP land, the Commissioner said work on renovating the Public Utility Building and Jayanagar Shopping Complex will soon start.

Satisfactory tenure

Addressing presspersons for the last time in her capacity as Mayor Mumtaz Begum on Wednesday said she had a "satisfactory tenure."

In the last five years, the Congress in the BMP had got 800 km of roads asphalted and 120 km concretised. "We have implemented most of the projects that we had promised in the BMP budget. Some projects have been delayed because of administrative problems.

Short stay homes for destitute women and old age homes for senior citizens, Dr. Rajkumar Glass House and evening Kannada classes for adults will be launched soon," she said.

Expressing displeasure over the State Government not having consulted the BMP Council before finalising the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) proposal, the Mayor termed it an "insult to democracy".

Clean chit to officer

The Mayor gave a clean chit to BMP Social Welfare Officer T.P. Shivanand, who has been placed under suspension, on charges of sexual harassment by some BMP tailoring teachers.
