Several violations by traders reportedly found

NEW DELHI: On the eve of a crucial hearing in the sealing case in the Supreme Court on Thursday, the Monitoring Committee appointed by it submitted to the Court its report that would decide the fate of a large number of traders who own showrooms and shops on 2,183 roads recently included in the list of commercial and mixed land use categories.

On Wednesday the three-member Monitoring Committee carried out random survey at various places in East Delhi, West Delhi and North Delhi, checking premises of those who had filed affidavits and undertakings with the MCD to stop misuse of their residential premises for commercial use. They visited Shahdara, Vikas Marg, Preet Vihar, GT Road, Model Town, Rohini, Pitampura, Tilak Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Hari Nagar, Mayapuri and Civil Lines.

Though the Monitoring Committee members refused to give details of the survey report, it is learnt that they found that at some places traders were still operating their businesses despite having given affidavits. The Supreme Court's verdict in the case would mainly depend on the report submitted by the Monitoring Committee members, sources said, adding that significantly, in its survey carried during the past two days, several violations by traders had been found.

The Monitoring Committee on Tuesday had carried out the survey in South Delhi covering various markets and residential areas.

Meanwhile, for the third consecutive day the MCD continued with its sealing drive on Najafgarh-Nangloi Road in Outer Delhi targeting as many as 176 properties for operating from residential areas and "Lal Dora" land. It also sealed dealership showrooms of Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors besides targeting at least half-a-dozen other big shopping arcades. Many shops dealing in hazardous and polluting trades were also sealed during the drive.

At the MCD's Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday, Congress and BJP councillors proposed to complete the process of identifying new roads to be brought under the commercial and mixed land use categories within next 10 days.
