Slum dwellers stage dharna

Special Correspondent

SEEKING SHELTER: Slum dwellers staging a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Gulbarga on Thursday.

GULBARGA: Slum dwellers on Thursday staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office under the banner of Dr Ambedkar Horata Samiti demanding houses under welfare schemes meant for Scheduled Castes and the Dr Ambedkar Housing Scheme. They also sought basic amenities in their slums.

The protestors, mostly women, who took out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office, presented a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey before staging the dharna. President of the Dr Ambedkar Horata Samiti S.G. Bharathi said that slum dwellers, particularly those who did not have a shelter of their own, were living in deplorable conditions without any basic amenities. Particularly, the Koncha Koravas, who were included in the Scheduled Caste list, were the most neglected without any houses being allotted to them. Most of them lived in temporary huts. Mr. Bharathi demanded that the district administration acquire lands to establish a colony for the Koncha Koravas. He said the Koncha Korava families were ready to pay their share of the construction cost under the Ashraya or Ambedkar housing schemes.
