Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty is known for his firm stand on matters affecting the public. But his intervention seems to have little effect on the ossified machinery in the City Corporation. For more than a month, the civic body has failed to heed a direction from the Minister to repair the damaged roads in the Thampanoor ward, hardly a stone's throw away from the Secretariat. After almost two years of incessant efforts to get repair works going on the deeply rutted road in the heart of the city, residents approached the Minister with a memorandum seeking his intervention. The Minister promptly directed the Corporation to initiate the work. Civic officials informed the Minister's office that the failure to renew the contract for supply of bitumen was responsible for the delay. A week later, the contract was renewed. Residents heaved a sigh of relief when heaps of metal were dumped by the sides of the road and a road roller started levelling the potholes. But the work ceased abruptly and men and machines disappeared. More than a month later, there is still no move to begin the work.
