Signalling chaos on road

If the primary purpose of a traffic signal is to regulate the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, the signal posts installed in front of the Secretariat appear to be a failure.

Even as traffic police watch, many motorists jump the red light at this point making crossing the road a hazardous proposition for pedestrians. In the absence of police personnel - particularly after dusk- the situation becomes more chaotic.

Moreover, when private and KSRTC buses choose to stop just before or ahead of the signal post many passengers who get down can be seen playing peek-a-boo with onrushing vehicles.

A short distance down the road, towards Pulimoodu Junction, the situation is not much different. Here pedestrians often play the role of traffic police and cross the road showing the `stop signal' with both hands. Often a group of pedestrians cross the road here unmindful of the unblinking green light for vehicular traffic.

The only time when there is orderly traffic in this area is when traffic police personnel blow their whistles and glare at motorists who are hesitant to obey the traffic signals.
