Diabetes programme ends

    CHENNAI: Around 400 students, doctors and patients in north Chennai participated in a rally marking the valedictory of the weeklong public awareness programme as part of the World Diabetes Day.

    The event was organised by the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital. The rally included nursing and medical students from the college and was flagged off by Cynthiya Alexander, superintendent of the Government RSRM Lying-in Hospital, Royapuram.

    R. Madhavan, head, Diabetology Department, Stanley Hospital, said, "The department is over 50 years old. We have a registry of 70,000 patients. Public education programmes include a session on injection technique of insulin." R.S. Hariharan, former head of the Diabetology department at Madras Medical College, spoke on the preventive aspects of diabetes and its complications.

    He called for lifestyle modification, including weight reduction, diet control and periodic screening.

    Stanley's Nursing college students presented a villupattu on the problems caused by diabetes and its prevention.
