Leasing out of land at Gulmarg put on hold

Special Correspondent

There is a lot of confusion: Mir

SRINAGAR: Bowing to the increasing pressure from both separatist and mainstream political parties, the Government on Thursday announced that it would put on hold the process of leasing out land at famous tourist spot Gulmarg stating that it would come out with a clarification on the issue.

While the hard-line separatist Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani has called a general strike for Saturday to protest the issue, National Conference president Omar Abdullah termed it as "New Delhi's plan" to sell land to outsiders and a senior Congress leader, Gani Vakil, said it was aimed at weakening Article 370.

At a new conference here, the Tourism Minister Mohammad Dillawar Mir, whose ministry issued the orders to lease out the land at Gulmarg on October 23 last, was cornered on the issue to clarify whether the apprehension that the land will be leased out to non-state subjects were true.
