PASSION FOR MUSIC: Singer Krishna Kumar interacts with presspersons in Mangalore on Thursday. Photo: R. Eswarraj
MANGALORE: Music has no boundaries for him nor does language. "It is melody that guides me as I sing," says Krishna Kumar Kunnath, better known as K.K. The popular playback singer of `Tadap tadap ke' fame was in the city on Wednesday for a live concert `Oh Hum Dum Suniyo Re' organised by Seagram Imperial Blue Superhits. "Performing live has a charm of its own. It is wonderful singing to people, not walls. Playback has its place though. I get the opportunity for live concerts because of success in playback," says K.K. Success has not come easy. Things have turned full circle from the days when he called his aunt continuously to know whether any music directors had called. "There were no mobiles or pagers back then. So when I was out, I would call back continuously to check if any music director had called in response to the tapes I had submitted.' It was with `Chod aaye hum' in Maachis that he entered the Hindi film industry. With tracks like Tadap Tadap, Pal and Tu Hi Meri Subh Hain to his credit today, K.K does not wait for calls anymore. Having met with success, the singer redefines ambition. "Ambition is about pushing oneself till you reach a point of perfection. I am ambitious to the point of satisfying myself," he said. "I just want to make sure I never lose the passion for music," he says. K.K had a piece of advice for youngsters queuing up for reality talent shows to make it to the big league: "Run the long road. There are no shortcuts to success or contentment. These shows provide a wonderful platform to youngsters, no doubt. But life exists outside it, where a hard struggle is necessary to succeed."
