Snag in MiG-21 rectified, says Antony

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Government has admitted that some MiG-21 aircraft crashed due to engine failure, with the Indian Air Force unable to come to grips with the problem for some time.

Investigators had now identified the cause as jamming of the reciprocating slide valve (RSV) of the engine fuel system due to contaminated fuel.

Answering a question in the Rajya Sabha, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said the engines were made of numerous intricate components. Sometimes, they developed problems while operating under different environmental conditions.

The IAF had taken steps to augment flight safety, including changing the RSV design and using ultra-thin filters during refuelling, he said.
