ONGOLE: Officials swarmed the busy Mangamuru donka here on Thursday and demolished several buildings encroaching upon the road to facilitate construction of a drain with proper alignment and solve the submersion problem in the posh locality.

They had to demolish some buildings to an extent of 7-8 feet to reclaim the land necessary for construction of the drain.

    Jig-jag construction

Mangamuru donka road ran through Vaddivanikunta, a desolate place some 30 years ago. But residential colonies sprang up in the area in the last two decades making it a posh area in the town. Roads and Buildings department laid 80-foot road in the place of donka road. But officials found to their dismay that the buildings were constructed in a jig-jag fashion making it difficult for them to construct a drain with proper alignment.

Consequently, whenever it rained the houses were inundated posing problems to residents. A team of officials from municipality and roads and buildings departments descended on the area on Thursday and demolished the buildings with the help of a poclain even as the police officers stood guard to tackle any law and order problem.

Town Planning Officer Veera Reddy said the demolition drive would continue on Friday also.

The municipality would later take up the drain work and solve submersion problem in Mangamuru donka, Sivaprasad colony etc.

As the drain would be some six feet away from the existing road, municipal officials need to widen the road to prevent encroachments between the drain and road in future.
