Delhi's past glory gets a new glow

It might be a backdrop that has now become synonymous with U.S. President George Bush's visit, but the beautifully lit Purana Quila got a chance to shine on its own on Wednesday. The perfect "stage'' to launch the World Heritage Week celebrations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), there was a performance by sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Giving the audience a taste of the whole spectrum of the arts, there was also a Kathak recital by Kathak Kendra.

"We are lighting up 15 important monuments in Delhi so that people can seep in our heritage even when they return from their work place,'' said Union Minister of Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni at the inauguration of the celebrations.

While the Qutub Minar has been shining for the past one year, the Safdarjung Tomb is likely to be the next in line. Apart from getting monuments to light up the sky, the Culture and Tourism Ministry is also planning to rope in children to protect monuments. "Children should be involved. I invite all of you to contribute to the National Culture Fund. It doesn't matter whether it is a big or small contribution. It is important that we get involved to save our cultural heritage,'' said Ms. Soni. -- Mandira Nayar
