Sawalakote power project stayed
Staff Reporter
Jammu:
In a new turn to the controversy over the Rs. 7,340-crore Sawalakote hydel power project, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has stayed the government decision to invite global tenders.
On a petition filed by the Sawalakote Consortium, the court asked the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation to maintain status quo on the project. The next hearing has been fixed for December 13.
The consortium said the Government's decision was unilateral and no consultation was held.
Project
The Farooq Abdullah regime awarded the project to consortium in July 1999. A review committee, formed by the present government, concluded that the then regime had not followed the international norms in allotment of work to the consortium. So the Government cancelled the contract.
