SEZ issue: CPI (M) may confront Sonia

Special Correspondent

Plans to hold demonstrations

  • Says Sonia owes an explanation to ryots who will be displaced due to the SEZ
  • Swadeshi Jagaran manch threatens agitation

Tirupati: The stir being pursued by the CPI (M) against the State Government's decision to set up a Special Economic Zone at Sathyavedu in the district is expected to reach a flash point if the party's move to take a delegation to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi during her visit here on Saturday materialises. The issue assumes significance in the wake of a note of dissent recently struck by Sonia Gandhi against the acquisition of fertile agricultural lands for the purpose of SEZs.

The CPI (M), which is spearheading a campaign on behalf of the local farmers against the acquisition of their lands for the SEZ, is planning to hold demonstrations in front of the guesthouse where Sonia would stay during her visit.

In a statement, the CPI (M) said that a delegation of the party would try to call on Sonia Gandhi and present a memorandum on the issue. The Secretary of the party's district unit, K. Murali, said that Sonia in fact owed an explanation to the families of the farmers who would be displaced if the Government acquired their fertile land for the SEZ proposed on 10,000-acres on the Sathyavedu-Varadaiahpalem tract.

Meanwhile, the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch asserted that bulk of the land to be acquired for the SEZ was fertile land and warned that it would launch an agitation if the Government goes ahead with the project.
