Fast by retired sugar unit workers

KADAPA: Retired workers of Kadapa Cooperative Sugars Ltd. launched a relay hunger strike before Collectorate on Thursday demanding payment of salary arrears to them and kin of those dying in harness.

Though the State Government issued orders to pay salaries and benefits to 60 workers who retired and 50 workers who died during the factory's lay-off period from 1995 to 2005, managing director of the unit Rami Reddy had not yet made the payment, the retired workers alleged. Twenty more workers died after the factory was revived, they said. Recalling that the Government granted Rs. 7 crores for developing the sugar unit, they demanded utilisation of Rs. 40 lakhs for paying benefits to retired and deceased workers.
