Self-immolation bid by Tibetan student

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: Lakhpa Tsering (21), a Tibetan student from Bangalore, tried to immolate himself outside the Taj Mahal hotel here on Friday to protest against the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

He is the president of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress. He arrived with 11 others in two taxis around 9 a.m. He then poured petrol and set himself on fire, while the others unfurled the Tibetan flag. He sustained burns on his legs. The police arrested the youth and are questioning 12 persons.

The police also prevented three youth from jumping off a flyover at Marine Drive while Mr. Hu's convoy was leaving for the airport.

At Azad Maidan, Tibetan traders from Karnataka and Mumbai gathered to chant prayers.
