KANNUR: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar has said that the Government will appoint sports commission as part of drafting a comprehensive sports policy for the State. Inaugurating a seminar on the `sports sector in Kerala over the last 50 years' organised by the Kannur University Union on the Mangattuparamba campus here on Thursday, Mr. Vijayakumar said the Government would announce a comprehensive sports policy on the basis of the recommendations of the commission. The Government's sports policy was to equip athletes in the State to win gold medal in the London Olympics scheduled for 2012, he stated. Expressing the Government's `golden vision' on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the State's formation, the Minister said that youth from the State would be able to reap gold for the nation in the next Olympics. The Government was evolving policies with this goal in mind, he said adding that boys and girls with extraordinary sports talent would be given intensive training both inside and outside the courts. The Minister said the Government was planning to mobilise Rs.500 crore for the development of the sports sector. The sports lottery was part of this endeavour, he said. The Government was also planning to form a separate department for sports. Terming the State a sports mine of the country, he said "unfortunately we are not able to make full use of this mine". Calling for making sports a part of development, Mr. Vijayakumar said provisions would be made in the Plan fund for development of sports University union chairman K.V. Sumesh presided. Pro Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan and athlete Greeshma were among those present.
