MADURAI : The flood threat in the Vaigai receded with the discharge from the Vaigai dam coming down drastically on Thursday. The discharge that was 21,750 cusecs on Wednesday morning came down to 6,222 after 24 hours. The maximum flow realised in the river in Madurai city (as recorded at Viraganur regulator) has come down to 4,485 cusecs at 4 p.m. on Thursday, from 11,297 cusecs at midnight on Wednesday. Floodwater has reached Thelichathanallur, 13 km downstream off Parthibanur, at 4 p.m. Parthibanur received only 6,164 cusecs at 4 p.m.
Water level
The water level in the Vaigai dam was 69 feet with an inflow of 6,222 cusecs and a discharge of 3,775 cusecs. The level in the Periyar dam stood at 138.40 feet with an inflow of 4,715 cusecs and a discharge of 1,100 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 8,830 mcft. Idayapatti recorded the highest rainfall of 18 mm followed by Viraganur dam 5, Sathaiyar dam 3, Shanmuganadi, Kallandiri, Chittampatti, Pulipatti and Thaniyamangalam 2 mm each and Veerapandi, Manjalar dam and Melur 1 mm each.
Virudhunagar
Vembakottai 38.8 mm, Sattur 24.6, Sivakasi 8, Srivilliputtur 5.4, Virudhunagar 3.1, Rajapalayam 1 and Aruppukottai 0.3 mm.
