CPI(M) seeks fair deal for land oustees

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) State Committee has urged the Government to pay compensation to farmers whose lands are being acquired for special economic zones (SEZs) in accordance with market rate.

The committee which met here on November 20 and 21 said the Government's policies on SEZs were unclear and that they appeared to be encouraging real estate business.

The Government should provide rehabilitation cards for affected families and ensure that the compensation for assignment lands was on a par with patta lands.

While eligible locals should be provided employment in the SEZs, the Government should take steps to provide relief to the farm labour, it said.

The party observed that the Government should explore alternatives and acquire non-agricultural lands for its proposed projects and take steps to ensure that a majority of the SEZs were set up in the backward areas.
