Bypoll no referendum on Telangana, says Digvijay

Terms BJP's move to introduce Bill a political stunt

HYDERABAD: AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh has said that the byelection to the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat cannot be construed as a referendum on Telangana.

"The Congress does not agree with the stand taken by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao that the bypoll is a referendum," Mr. Singh said at a press conference after his return from Karimnagar here on Thursday.

He expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious in both Karimnagar and Bobbili Lok Sabha seats. Terming the BJP's move to introduce a private member's Bill on Telangana in Parliament a `political stunt,' he reiterated the party's stand not to support the Bill.

The Congress could not take a decision without discussing it with United Progressive Alliance partners, he noted. Charging the BJP with indulging in doublespeak, he questioned as to why Telangana did not figure in its agenda when Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal were formed. Despite the TRS pulling out of the UPA, efforts would continue to evolve a consensus on the issue. To a question, he said the Congress would respect the Election Commission's direction to shift three police officers in Karimnagar in connection with the seizure of cash and cricket kits. "The TRS chief has written an excellent script that has been perfectly executed by his nephew T. Harish Rao," he commented.

He said AICC president Sonia Gandhi was concerned about the land acquisition in and around Hyderabad and added that displaced farmers should be paid compensation at market rate.

He complimented the Government for taking back 855 acres of land from IMG Bharata.
