Jewellery heist

Tirupati: Miscreants broke into Saravana Jewellers in broad daylight on Thursday and decamped with ornaments worth Rs.50 lakhs. A hole was found on the common wall that separates the showroom and its adjoining shop. The police are on the lookout for labourers who were working in the adjacent shop for over a fortnight and are since missing. - Staff Reporter

Group-I marks list

HYDERABAD: Marks of interviewed candidates for Group-I posts will be displayed at the APPSC notice board on Saturday evening, according to APPSC Chairman Y. Venkatrami Reddy. He said the interviews held after the court directions were completed on Thursday.

Constable fires in air

GUNTUR: A head constable Naresh Prasad of the CRPF, who was allegedly in an inebriated condition, opened fire into the air near Macherla town police station on Thursday to disperse a mob of RTC employees who came there to complain against two CRPF constables — R.G. Misrim and G.V. Rathnam. The employees said the constables allegedly abused four conductors. On hearing the gunshots, G. Ramesh Babu, SI, rushed out and brought the situation under control. - Staff Reporter

Tension over death

Sangareddy: Tension prevailed in Chipaplturthi Jagan tanda of Narsapur mandal over the death of a woman Ratla Bujji (21) on Thursday. Her in-laws said that she had committed suicide. However, Bujji's parents charged their son-in-law Jagan and in-laws — Tarabai and Vithal — with torturing their daughter to death demanding extra dowry. Relatives of Bujji attacked Jagan's house and damaged their property and tried to set it afire. A case of suspicious death has been booked. - Staff Reporter

CCI purchase centres

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Wednesday promised the Rythu Sangham that steps would be taken to open purchase centres of the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). He was responding to a memorandum submitted by sangham leaders led by S. Malla Reddy, secretary, seeking Rs.2,500 for a quintal of cotton. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Bharti Airtel has unveiled a new plan for pre-paid customers in the State. The offer — priced at Rs. 2,399 — comes with a colour LG-KG handset and 2,399 minutes of free talk time among Airtel connection holders in addition to a two-year validity period.

Two for police meet

Sangareddy: Two constables — Mahesh Kumar and Prem Kumar — of Medak police headquarters will take participate in the national-level Police Sports Meet to be held in New Delhi from November 25.

Fire mishap at mill; no casualities

ADILABAD: A fire broke out at the Salasar Balaji ginning mill at Bela mandal headquarters on Thursday afternoon destroying two heaps of cotton weighing about 2,000 quintals. - Staff Reporter

District science fair from today

NIZAMABAD: The three-day district level science fair for the year 2006-07 will commence at the SFS High School here on Friday. Mayor D. Sanjay will declare it open, according to organisers. The theme of the fair is `Science and Technology for Sustainable Development'. It will be conducted with special focus on food and agriculture, industries and environment, energy, education-science and mathematical models, transport and communications, teachers' projects, NCC students' environment projects and metric mela.

WARANGAL: The district Sepak Takraw Association is hosting junior inter-district Sepak Takraw championship for boys and girls from November 24 to 26 here. Workers pay hike

SANGAREDDY : The workers at the Fasalwadi-based Ganapati Sugar Industries achieved a wage hike of Rs. 1,500 to 2,200 following an agreement with the management inked on Tuesday. In a press note issued here the Ganapati Sugar Industries Employees Union affiliated to CITU announced that the wage agreement would allow them allowances worth Rs. 10,000 that includes medical allowance of Rs. 300 and children's educational allowance of Rs. 200.

Child labour linked to salary

KURNOOL: Government employees will receive their November pay only after producing an undertaking that they did not engage child workers as domestic help in their houses. The salary-drawing officers have been asked to collect the certificates and preserve them for future verification.-Special Correspondent

Trauma care centre opened

KURNOOL : DIG of Police KRM Kishore Kumar inaugurated the trauma care centre at the Kurnool Heart and Brain Centre in the city on Thursday. He said though speciality centres have come up in private sector, very few were offering emergency care in rural areas. APSP DIG Gopinath Reddy, Consultants G.R. Chandraksekhar, P. Chandrasekhar were present.

Jagan gives away certificates

KADAPA: YSR Foundation chairman Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy gave away certificates on Thursday to 1,100 Congress functionaries of Hindupur for donating blood at a blood donation camp in Pulivendula on November 14. Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the Chief Minister, who came to Pulivendula on Thursday performed pooja in Swamy Ayyappa temple at Pulivendula.

Test for home guards

Kakinada: Three-km run test will be conducted for those who applied for home guard driver posts, at the ADB road Achampet junction at 6 ka.m. on November 26, according to A. V. Ranganath, Additional SP (administration).

He said written test was conducted for 210 candidates for selection of home guard computer operators on November 21. Out of them, 73 qualified and they were tested for computer knowledge the next day.

The list of merit candidates, he said, would be forwarded to the State police office. - Correspondent

Survey of PHCs

Kakinada: The basic line surveys on the conditions of the laboratories in government hospitals and primary health centres in the district suggest that the existing infrastructure, manpower and chemicals are inadequate and needed further improvement, according to Padmavati, incharge of Microbiological lab, Hyderabad.

She had been here for the past one week conducting the basic line surveys. She said the survey report would be forwarded to the World Health Organisation for consideration and sanction of World Bank funds. - Correspondent

Selected for research programme

Kakinada: Two Assistant Professors of Computer sciences from Kakinada Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET) - G. Nagendra Kumar and D. Usha Rajesweri -- have been selected for the Microsoft Research programme ` Phoenix information representation transformation'.

This programme will be held for five days in Information Institute of Information Technology from December 4. Jim Hogg from Microsoft Research, US, with his team will conduct special sessions in this workshop. - Correspondent
