SINGAPORE: Malaysia plans to appoint "religious attaches" at its diplomatic missions in some key western and Asia-Pacific countries. The objective is to assist its students on issues like marriage and the observance of Ramzan, said a Minister in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. The countries identified include the U.K., the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. Majority-Muslim Indonesia is the only country where Malaysia has such an attache. Malaysia, which has a Malay-Muslim majority, is also home to significant ethnic minorities - Chinese and Indians of different faiths including Islam. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been advocating civilisational Islam as the creed to be followed by Muslims.
