Varma scores unbeaten century

Rohtak: A.S.K. Varma scored a fighting unbeaten 105 even as Joginder Sharma and Sachin Rana shared seven wickets between them to help Haryana restrict Andhra to 202 all out on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group `A' match on Thursday.

Sharma returned figures of four for 54, while Rana took three for 37 to wreck the Andhra batting line-up, which had elected to bat first at the Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium at Lahli village near here.

The visitor owed its total to Varma, whose 105 contained 11 hits to the fence.

Among the rest, only L.N.P. Reddy (10), K.S. Sahabuddin (21), D. Kalyankrishna (11) and Y.L. Kishore (14) reached double digits.

Rao fails

Captain Y. Venugopala Rao (four), M.S.K. Prasad (two), Y. Gnaneswara Rao (0), A.G. Pradeep (six), R.V.Ch. Prasad (eight) and M. Faiq (two) failed to make any significant contribution as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

In reply, Haryana was eight without loss at close. Sumit Sharma (0) and Sunny Singh (six) were at the crease.

Anirudh shines

Meanwhile at Karad (Maharashtra), Hyderabad was 254 for three in 70 overs when bad light stopped play on the first day of its Group `B' match against Maharasthra.

Anirudh Singh was unbeaten on 100 (197b, 12x4), while A.T. Rayudu (seven) was giving him company at close.

The other main contribution for Hyderabad came from opener D.B. Ravi Teja who made 84 (101b, 13x4).

Skipper V.V.S. Laxman scored 31 off 75 deliveries before falling to R.P. Jadhav.

The scores:

At Rohtak: Andhra 202 in 70.4 overs (A.S.K. Varma 105 not out, Joginder Sharma four for 54) vs. Haryana eight without loss in six overs.

At Karad: Hyderabad 254 for three in 70 overs (Anirudh Singh 100 batting, Ravi Teja 84) vs. Maharashtra.
