End NLC contract workers' strike: CPI

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged the Centre and the State Government to take necessary steps to end the week-long strike by contract workers of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

In a press release, the State secretariat of the party said it was shocked that a major public sector undertaking like the NLC instead of being a model employer was indulging in "unfair" labour practices.

The workers had a legitimate right to bonus which should be conceded.

If the issue was not settled at the earliest, the CPI would be forced to conduct demonstrations throughout the State in support of the workers, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Held for panchayat chief's murder

TIRUNELVELI: The Kuruvikulam police on Thursday arrested the vice-president of Nakkalamuththanpatti panchayat and his wife for allegedly murdering the panchayat president on Wednesday.

Police said Thiruppathi Raja and Regina Mary were arrested and remanded to judicial custody in the wee hours of Thursday for murdering Jakkaiyan due to previous enmity. — Staff Reporter

Security at railway stations tightened

Dharmapuri: Security has been tightened at all railway stations in Dharmapuri district in view of the death anniversary of a naxalite leader falling on Friday. Siva alias Parthiban was killed in an encounter by police at Chinnakanakampatti near Uthangkarai on November 24, 2002.

Police sources said additional check posts had been created at Uthangkarai, Naripalli and Samiapuram to prevent infiltration of naxalites. Three teams from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad had been deputed to Dharmapuri, Morapur and Bommidi railway stations.

The Railway police have also installed video cameras to monitor the entry and exit of passengers.

Open line patrolling and track monitoring have been stepped up on all the 10 pairs of trains touching Dharmapuri. — Staff Reporter

Applications for B.E. course

MADURAI: The last date for receipt of applications for April 2006 examinations of 4-year B.E. degree course, conducted by the Madurai Kamaraj University, is November 31.

According to a press release issued by S. Shanmugiah, Controller of Examinations, students can submit applications with a penalty of Rs. 100 up to December 15. Examination application forms can be downloaded from the website www.mkuniversity.org/forms/html.

Jewels stolen

RAMANATHAPURAM : An unidentified gang on Thursday stole Rs.10 lakh worth of gold ornaments from a house at Melatheru in Keelakarai near here.

Sources said the burglars, who gained entry into the house from the backdoor of the house of Mohamed Kasim, broke the almirah and took away 98 sovereigns of various ornaments.

Acting on a complaint, the Keelakarai police are investigating.

Indefinite strike

RAMANATHAPURAM : Mechanized boat fishermen based at Pamban on Thursday launched an indefinite strike condemning the Sri Lankan Navy for firing at Tamil Nadu fishermen.

They urged the State and Central Government to persuade the Sri Lankan

Government to stop the indiscriminate attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were fishing in the `traditional fishing areas'.

The have also sent memorandums to fisheries officials and the Collector.

Demonstration

Nagercoil : Depositors who had invested their money at a private finance firm at Kumarapuram near Thuckalay staged a demonstration in front of the Economic Offence Wing police station here on Wednesday.

According to sources, they demanded action against the firm owner and the retrieval of their deposits. The proprietor of the bank, Jeyachandran was already arrested a few days ago from Kerala on a charge of cheating his depositors.

Tuticorin : Employees affiliated to the Tuticorin Port Trust Democratic Staff Union staged a demonstration here on Thursday, to press their multi-point demands.

The agitators demanded that the contract workers employed at the port canteen should be made permanent, settlement reached on the bonus issue at the earliest and direct recruitment made to fill the vacancies at the TPT at the earliest.

Woman ends life

PERAMBALUR: Shakila Banu (25) allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire after dousing with kerosene at her residence in Labbaikudikadu near here on Wednesday night. The woman resorted to the extreme step following alleged dowry harassment, police said. An inquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered. The police have registered a case against her husband, Sadakatullah; her mother-in-law, Subaida Begam; and their relative, Mumtaj.

"Power supply given to 82 pumpsets"

PERAMBALUR: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has provided power supply to a total of 82 agricultural pumpsets in the district so far during the current financial year. Addressing `Farmers' grievances day' meeting here on Thursday, the Collector, Anil Meshram, said that 42 farmers in the common category, 22 under the special category and 18 others under the `self-financing scheme' got power supply for their pump sets.The District Revenue Officer, Baskaran, was among those who were present.

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 113.54 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 7,280 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Computer training

ERODE: Sree Amman Arts and Science College, Chitode, has decided to conduct computer training for higher secondary school teachers and employees of the Education Department from Friday. The programme will be inaugurated in the college at 10 a.m., said the college correspondent, T. Jayalakshmi.

A total of 122 faculty members of government and government-aided schools in Erode district will participate in the training. Practical training will be given to Plus II students studying in schools in rural areas in the college lab. This will help in the promotion of educational standard in government schools, he added.

Programme for farmers

ERODE: The Agricultural Department here is conducting training programme for farmers in technology management, says a release from the Department.

Carried out under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) banner, farmers are trained at the village level, where they are told about proven technologies through demonstrations and also taken to field visits.

Recently, 25 farmers were trained, says the release adding the programme was on high-yielding technologies. For effective implementation, block-level committees have also been formed.

The programme has 90 per cent of its funding from the Central Government and the remaining from farmers' contribution. The Project Officer, ATMA, Jagath Narayanan, is coordinating the event. - Staff Reporter
