Returning Officer replaced

MYSORE: Returning Officer for the Chamundeshwari byelection Chikkathammaiah has been replaced by Mysore Urban Development Authority Secretary Rajendran.

Deputy Commissioner of Mysore Selva Kumar said the Election Commission of India had issued an order on Thursday evening directing the change without assigning any reason. — Staff Correspondent

No `Janata Darshan' this week

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will not be holding `Janata Darshan' on Saturday. The programme has been cancelled as he is touring Mysore district, according to an official press release. — Staff Reporter

My phones tapped: Shivakumar

Bangalore: The former Minister and senior Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar has complained to the Bangalore Commissioner of Police and the Inspector-General of Police (Intelligence) that four of his personal telephones are being tapped in violation of the privacy Act.

He said he had adequate evidence to prove that his landline and mobile telephone connections were being tapped. The police should identify those who had ordered the tapping of his telephones and take action against them, he said. — Special Correspondent

KPSC to verify documents

Bangalore: The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) has arranged for the verification of the original documents of candidates from November 24 to November 29 on the basis of marks obtained by them in the competitive examination for posts of junior assistant/second division assistant held on June 25.

According to a KPSC press release, the register numbers and other details of candidates who have been called for document verification can be had from the commission's website, http://kpsc.kar.nic.in. — Special Correspondent

`Work on medical college progressing'

Bidar: All preparations for starting a government medical college in Bidar are complete. The first stage of construction will be completed by December-end, Agriculture Minister and district in-charge Bandeppa Kashempur has said. Speaking to presspersons after inspecting the college building here, he said a team of Medical Council of India inspectors was expected to visit the college in January.

Of the 97 teachers needed for the college, 61 have been appointed. There is no dearth of funds for starting the college, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Film artiste Doddanna felicitated

BANGALORE: The noted film artiste Doddanna, who contested the 2004 Lok Sabha elections from Shimoga on the Janata Party ticket, has asked his party to prepare for Assembly elections. Mr. Doddanna, a recipient of the Suvarna Karnataka Rajyotsava award, was speaking at a function organised by the Bangalore unit of party to felicitate him here on Thursday.

Earlier, leaders of the party submitted a memorandum to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi urging him to ask the Government to develop Bidar, Bijapur, Hubli and Davangere cities instead of creating Greater Bangalore. — Staff Reporter

Rally by insurance employees

MYSORE: Members of the Insurance Corporation Employees' Association held a rally here on Thursday against the Union Government's move to invite direct foreign investment in the insurance sector. A two-day division conference of the association commenced at Nada Brahma Sangeetha Sabha and insurance employees from Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar and Kodagu participated in it. Speakers at the conference accused the United Progressive Alliance Government of being "anti-labour". — Staff Correspondent

Teams formed

MYSORE: The district administration has taken steps to prevent illegal preparation, transportation, hoarding and distribution of liquor. The Excise Department has formed six teams to prevent such illegal activities in the Chamundeshwari constituency in view of a directive by the Chief Election Commissioner. Complaints can be lodged on Ph.: 2541863 and with the district intelligence squad on Ph.: 2442453.

MYSORE: Jagadguru Sri Shivarathreeshswara Law College has secured 18 ranks in the Law examination for 2005-06 conducted by the University of Mysore, according to principal K.S. Suresh. While eight students secured ranks in B.A.L. examination, five got ranks in the five-year

LL.B course and five in the three-year LLB course.

`Ban rath yatras'

GADAG: The Komu Souharda Vedike has alleged that the Sangha Parivar of Karnataka with the support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has organised "Panchajanya, Sudarshan Rath Yatras" in its attempt to make Karnataka another Gujarat.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Basavaraj Sulebhavi, State convenor of the vedike, alleged that yatras were being conducted by the BJP and indirectly supported by its coalition partner the Janata Dal (Secular).

Mr. Sulebhavi said the vedike would urge the Union Government to ban rath yatras. — Staff Correspondent

Elected

MADIKERI: B.G. Raghunath Naik, advocate and president of the Virajpet taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat, has been re-elected the honorary president of the Kodagu Motor Workers Union.

M.C. Ashok was elected president, while M. Yousuf and K.D. Cariappa were selected as the vice-presidents, according to information received here on Thursday from the office of the union. — Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI: The Doordarshan's Chandana Kannada channel will beam a programme called, "Belagu", featuring interviews with Virajpet MLA H.D. Basavaraj on the development of the Virajpet constituency, from 7 a.m. to 7.45 a.m. on November 26. Mr. Basavaraj will speak on development works initiated in the constituency.
