KGF: High Court fiat to Centre
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the Union Government to prepare and place before it a revised rehabilitation package for workmen of the now defunct Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Kolar district.
The Bharat Gold Mines Ltd., which was operating the KGF, was closed after it became a loss-making public sector undertaking (PSU).
However, some workmen of the gold mines filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a rehabilitation package. A single judge allowed the petition and it was later upheld by a Division Bench.
The Centre, following the High Court orders, had come up with a rehabilitation scheme and it had invited global tenders from firms interested in taking up the project. When the matter came up, it was suggested to the Centre that the global tenders were not necessary and that the package could be drawn up by calling for local tenders.
Justice V.G. Sabhahit directed the Centre to place the revised package before the next date of hearing.
